Andrew Hong

Investment Associate at Brightspark Ventures
Impact Investing Fellow (2020-2021)
"I took part in the impact investing program, which opened my eyes to the world of impact investing, venture capital and social entrepreneurship."

What was your career path?

"As a new business student who transferred from my life sciences program at McGill, I didn’t really identify myself with the “business” profile that I saw in most of my peers around me. The idea of using business and capital to create societal good really inspired me and drew me to the Impact Investing program. Little did I know it would change the trajectory of my life and open my eyes to the world of impact investing, venture capital, and social entrepreneurship."

How did Propel Impact help you grow?

Andrew participated in the Propel Impact Investing Fellowship, where he gained firsthand exposure to the world of early stage impact venture capital investing. He worked closely with entrepreneurs building high-impact ventures in Montreal, diving into their data rooms, assessing the financial, market, and impact validity of their businesses, and contributing to investment committee discussions. While the experience was invaluable for his professional growth, what Andrew remembers most is the relationships he built during the program. "The highlight was definitely the friendships I built through the program. I remain close to many of the people I met and worked with during my time in the fellowship, even beyond my own fund. It allowed me to meet people I wouldn’t have met otherwise if not for the cross-country spanning program who gathered smart individuals passionate in creating a difference in the world." Before joining Propel, Andrew was still navigating his transition from science to business. "The Propel Impact Investing Fellowship Program has been pivotal in shaping my career and has surely allowed me to be where I am today.” His involvement in the Impact Investing Fellowship opened new doors, introducing him to alternate impact-related career paths. Through this experience, he connected with professionals in social impact consulting and venture philanthropy, leading him to a term at LEAP Pecaut Centre for Social Impact. There, he gained exposure to strategy consulting, ultimately guiding him to a role at Monitor Deloitte. Combining his skillsets and experiences from consulting and impact venture capital, he is now back to investing in early stage startups as a VC investor at Brightspark Ventures.

What issue do you most want to tackle in the world?

Looking ahead, Andrew is committed to supporting others on their respective journeys of finding and doing what they love. "As a Korean Canadian immigrant who grew up with no business connections in Canada, I’ve had to figure everything out on my own. Though I was fortunate to meet mentors that helped guide me along the way, most of the journey was me diving head first and iterating as I went. I truly believe life is best and happily lived when you do what you love, and I’m keen to help others do so too. Whether that’s to become an impact investor, a nurse, or a pastry chef, I think there’s a way to methodically strategize one’s path that increases chances of career fulfillment and success, ideally positively impacting others along the way. I hope to help people find their paths and encourage them to work with others to great good in this world.”
