Nectar

The Context

Pollinators play a critical role in global agriculture. Migratory beekeepers are responsible for pollinating roughly 35% of the crops we grow, yet the industry faces rising costs and alarming colony mortality rates approaching 45% annually.

Nectar Technologies is building the operating system for the global beekeeping industry. Its precision beekeeping platform enables commercial beekeepers to digitize colony tracking, monitor hive health, and make data-driven decisions to improve productivity and reduce losses.

By aggregating colony-level data across thousands of hives, Nectar aims to unlock predictive insights that help protect pollinator health while improving beekeeper profitability.

Details

Focus Area: Climate-smart agriculture & water conservation (SDG 6, SDG 13)

Deal size: $50,000

Year: 2022

The Need

In 2023, Nectar was looking to expand across commercial beekeepers and advance its precision agriculture platform.

The Deal

The Montreal Propel Impact Fellowship team invested $25,000 in Nectar in 2023.

Since our investment, Nectar has expanded rapidly, with 49 commercial beekeeping operations under contract and 273,500 colonies monitored on the platform. The company collects over one million data points per day across more than 200,000 hives, building one of the largest datasets in the commercial beekeeping industry. Nectar is now developing AI-powered analytics to help beekeepers predict colony survivorship, optimize operations, and protect pollinator health at scale.
